The Land of Enchantment holds many mysteries. Treasures of mineral and historic value abound in this land of deserts and mountains. Gold, silver, copper are some of the most sought after minerals, maintaining a large mining industry and employing the community for many decades. Ghost towns from mining days gone by and old mine shafts litter the land as a testament of the will of old timers trying to find the "big One". Wild game including turkey, elk, bear, deer, antelope and mountain loins are some of the big game that inhabits the private and Gila national forest lands. White tail coues deer and mule deer are a favorite of hunters and photographers alike. Many Indian ruins still exist in many areas of the southwest. The Gila cliff dwellings offer a great hike to allow one to explore first hand an ancient community and get a feeling of the life style of the people who lived there. the dwellings are back in the mountains not too deep into the forest, just about 1 hr and 30 min from town. The drive is exhilarating and full of great views. Hot springs are close by to alleviate any stress from the drive, the springs are right in the Gila river so you can cool down easy. Many artifacts have been uncovered over the years. Caves have provided an abundant trail of pottery for many museums and private collections. Old ruins and grave sites are still uncovered to this day, both by man and nature. The strong monsoons that hit the southwest can wash away earth in their torrent of water revealing the hidden treasures below. The art work of the past has inspired modern artist to pursue old styles and techniques, incorporating them into their new works.
